New Development Officially Opened 11 May 2007

An official opening took place on 11th May to recognise the completion of the major site re-development work that has taken place at Te Puia.
As well as new school facilities for both the Carving and Weaving schools, two new high-tech galleries have been established which showcase the mythical origins of the Whakarewarewa geothermal valley and provide a deeper learning experience into the area and it's people, the Maori arts, crafts and way of life. This first class product is delivered through audio-visual and interactive touch screen technologies. A model village, new galleries, retail store and the establishment of a nature trail are also part of the re-development.
The opening commenced with the traditional greeting and Powhiri, welcoming guests to Te Puia, followed by oratories and speeches; entertainment provided by the students of Whakarewarewa School and concluded with a sumptuous feast. Among guests were son of Paramount Chief, Tumu te Heu Heu, Timi te Heu Heu representing his father; Prime Minister, the Honourable Helen Clark who together unveiled the official plaques commemorating the new development, Te Tawharau o Te Ao Turoa.
