Nga Manu Ahurei - Kiwi House

The Kiwi House first opened in 1976, with the aim of increasing public awareness and education around the plight of our national treasure. By coming to Te Puia, visitors are directly contributing to kiwi survival by assisting in the funding of our conservation programme.

Kiwi are nocturnal, so the Kiwi House uses a reversed lighting cycle to simulate night time during the day, allowing visitors to see the unique bird in action. As kiwi are so sensitive to light and movement, this is the only place in Te Puia where photography is not permitted.
