Wahi Maumahara

The final section of Ngā Waru Pūmanawa Gallery (Exhibition Gallery) is a wahi maumahara (memorial space). This space is dedicated to the Te Whakarewarewa Valley’s internationally famous Maori guides of the past, including Guide Rangi (pictured with the young Queen Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh) and Maggie Papakura (centre left).

Te Puia’s guides are part of a guiding legacy that reaches back before the beginning of the 20th century. Collectively our Māori guides have conducted millions of people through the Te Whakarewarewa valley and affection for them continues to carry to every corner of the globe.

Te Puia’s guided tours are an insightful and intimate way to experience all that Te Puia has to offer. For more information see Our Heritage »
