Description
The kotiate is one of several, one-handed short weapons. It is distinguishable by its width and the unusual overlapping lobes on either side of the weapon. The lobes were used to cut the liver from the body after death, hence the name ‘koti’ (cut) and ‘ate’ (liver). Like all weaponry, kotiate were extremely valued by the owner and as a consequence, they acquired personal names and were typically handed down from one generation to the next.
