It’s one of the most authentic ways to experience Rotorua dining, and at Pātaka Kai Restaurant & Bar, our hāngī is prepared using this same traditional method, paired with a buffet of Māori and international flavours.

Our Hāngī Buffet Lunch from 11:30am, features a fusion of Māori and international flavours, from corn & watercress soup to chicken steamed underground in the hāngī. Book your table to secure your spot.

A traditional hāngī typically takes around three to four hours to cook, depending on the quantity and type of food being prepared. The slow cooking process allows the natural flavours to develop while creating the tender texture hāngī is famous for. More than just a cooking method, preparing a hāngī is an important Māori tradition that brings people together through shared food and culture.

Hāngī is served at Māori cultural attractions and events throughout New Zealand, with Rotorua widely regarded as one of the best places to experience it thanks to the region’s strong Māori cultural tourism offering.
